Keeping your fridge organised can feel like a mammoth task, but it doesn’t have to be. With a few tricks up your sleeve, you can soon turn your fridge into an organised haven of delicious chilled goods.

1. Put things in boxes or baskets
Instead of leaving items scattered on shelves or in the doors, group them into boxes. Use one for meat, one for vegetables, and another for dairy.
2. Use a colour code system
Take it a step further with different coloured boxes or labels. Colours can show categories or even expiry dates so you know at a glance what needs using soon.
3. Mark dates on opened items
Write the date on lids or packaging when you open something. A quick note with a marker helps you track how long products are safe to use.
4. Store food in the right places
Where you put items matters. Keep meat on the bottom shelf, vegetables in drawers, dairy in the middle, and condiments in the door. This helps food last longer and keeps things safe.
5. Make mats for the shelves
DIY fridge mats make cleaning up spills much easier. Cut liners to size so you can remove and wash them instead of scrubbing shelves.
6. Avoid over-stocking
Packing too much in means wasted food and poor airflow. When air can’t circulate, the temperature varies and food spoils faster.
7. Keep the fridge cool
Check the temperature regularly. Whether freestanding or built-in, it should stay at 5°C or below for safe storage.
8. Check what’s inside before shopping
A quick look helps you avoid buying duplicates and keeps waste to a minimum.
9. Keep food whole and wrapped
Vegetables last longer when stored whole instead of chopped. Always wrap items well—especially meat—to keep them fresh and to avoid leaks.
10. Keep a note on the fridge door
Write down what’s inside and when it expires. Stick it to the door so meal planning is easier and food doesn’t get forgotten.
